01 · The page as a system
The important change was below the fold.
Original main · sidebar recordSelected · one editorial grid
Scroll inside to compare the whole page, or expand both. Images open at full size. These are fresh local renders of saved code with current shared content, not historical database snapshots. Original main: 1440px; first and selected: 1330px. Development and player overlays remain visible.
The portfolio already had the ingredients: a personal voice, photographs, generative studies, a character, a career record, and principles. The design problem was their relationship. Some sections behaved like a résumé sidebar, others like an editorial page, and others like standalone demos.
I wanted the site to communicate the range of a Staff-level designer without making a hiring manager assemble the story. I directed the hierarchy, set constraints, critiqued the alternatives, and selected what moved forward. AI-assisted tools produced studies and implementation; my decisions determined which of those studies deserved a place on the page.
The selected result brings identity, personal work, professional context, and working principles into a consistent reading order. The record below includes the dead ends and corrections that made that consistency possible. It documents a shipped design, not a measured improvement in hiring outcomes.
02 · Six changes across the complete page
From adjacent sections to a shared composition.
The first coded translation was useful precisely because it was incomplete. It exposed what the Paper composition had not settled: navigation across routes, the scale of the opening, repeated content, and the mismatch between the biography’s edge and the inset credential box.
The later work was a sequence of local decisions inside a frozen larger layout. Moving a heading was not only a spacing adjustment. It meant deciding whether a section was a peer of the biography, a supporting note, or an interruption in the reading order.
Identity
Before
Uppercase name, descriptor pills, social links and current role form a compact stack.
Selected
Name and socials share the top row. Three photographs and the character create a separate visual band.
Tradeoff
The name is unambiguous; imagery carries personality. The opening is taller and relies on deliberate crops.
Biography
Before
Narrative and illustration occupy the wide left column; credentials sit to the right.
Selected
Current context and the optics illustration form a margin. The larger letter occupies the main reading column.
Tradeoff
The letter becomes the narrative spine. The left column has less content and needs careful vertical balance.
Experience & education
Before
Logo clusters live in the sidebar; the first coded version moves them into an inset outlined box.
Selected
Logos and dates sit in rows aligned to the biography. Education uses the same heading and content tracks.
Tradeoff
Dates add information instead of repeating company names. Shared edges remove the box-within-page effect.
Exploration
Before
A tall contribution chart fills the sidebar; the first coded version places its title above the chart.
Selected
The label sits alongside a wide, shallow chart on the same grid as the credentials.
Tradeoff
The chart becomes supporting texture and evidence of activity. It is not presented as a measure of design quality.
Ethos
Before
Seven large numbered statements form a long, full-width sequence.
Selected
Two columns of statements sit within the content track, each led by a small hexagon.
Tradeoff
The ending is quieter and easier to scan. On narrow screens the columns become one continuous list.
Secondary content
Before
A standalone How I work section, repeated social line and interactive signature add additional stops.
Selected
Work points become smaller bullets immediately after the biography; the extra social line and signature control are removed.
Tradeoff
The same content supports the narrative without another large section. Some expressive interaction is deliberately given up.
Reconstructed layout diagram

Explanatory schematic, not an original design artifact. Desktop uses a 28% label track and a shared gap; smaller breakpoints relax the proportions, then stack the content.
“align all of this be follow the column witdth of the paragraphs above”
The below-the-hero studies tested letters, facing pages, indexes, and registers with the actual portfolio content. Feedback favored clean biography and company lockups while questioning small headings, color, and generic-looking composition. The next round treated those comments as a new brief.
These ten preserved studies are the later GitHub-synced Paper round. They expose different answers to the same full-page questions: where does the biography lead, how much space should credentials receive, and how do the principles conclude the page? The commentary beneath each is a retrospective reading of the artifact, not a claim that every rationale was stated at the time.
The jury’s shortlist included Facing pages, The two-column record, and Ink & daylight. A shortlist was not a selection. I subsequently supplied the favorite composition and asked to see a header fitted to that body.
body-01
The open letter
A direct personal narrative with a clear margin for context. The tradeoff is a longer reading sequence before credentials.
body-02
Facing pages
Biography and a supporting record share the spread. The two reading speeds are useful, but must resolve into one sequence on a phone.
body-03
The annotated letter
Marginal details and annotations make the writing feel authored. Too many annotations can compete with the main paragraph.
body-04
Practice & provenance
The work and its background receive distinct editorial zones. The structure makes evidence easy to find, at the cost of more sectional boundaries.
body-05
The two-column record
A deliberate parallel record balances narrative and credentials. Equal visual weight can obscure which column should lead.
body-06
A working index
An index provides quick entry points to a longer page. It adds navigation that has to earn its space on a relatively short portfolio.
body-07
Night letter
A dark treatment tests atmosphere and contrast around the same content. This is a tonal alternative, not proof of better hierarchy.
body-08
The graphite register
A restrained register emphasizes organization and a quiet reading rhythm. Its risk is making personal work feel administrative.
body-09
Ink & daylight
A lighter editorial contrast gives the writing and open space greater presence. Large blank areas must still support a clear scan path.
body-10
The long view
The complete narrative is treated as one extended page. This exposes pacing decisions that a hero-only crop would hide.
The preferred body supplied for the next round. Original saved artifact; later labels and interactions differ from the released page.Three header fits tested above the same body. Keeping the body constant made the relationship easier to compare.
04 · The brief accumulated through critique
Start with the person. Keep the work real.
This began as a presentation assignment: adapt an existing case study to the portfolio’s visual language and use the résumé as the source for formal experience. Further critique asked for better headings, stronger layouts, and a general-purpose Staff portfolio. An interactive working edition then made gaps in evidence and missing media explicit.
That led into the site. The opening had to keep my name at the top, retain the recessed navigation, preserve the content below the hero, and give the rotating ASCII object lightweight controls. Real photographs and generative work had to fit the page; an attractive empty template would not answer the brief.
Review also had to work away from the local machine. Hosted interactive previews became the useful comparison surface, while Paper held the editable compositions. The tools served different questions: Paper for arrangement, the browser for interaction, and Git for traceable implementation.
Original deck artifact. The working edition explicitly separated supplied evidence from missing material.
“Keep my name at the top. It’s a portfolio landing page for me”
Identity is the first read; the remaining page supports the name.
opening-02
Systems in motion
A systems-led opening places technical expression beside the professional story.
opening-03
Field notes
An editorial notebook treatment gives context and observations more presence.
opening-04
Work first
Project evidence leads the reading order. The name becomes less dominant.
opening-05
Design × engineering
The interactive object becomes a central expression of design and engineering.
opening-06
Studio
The second round restores a prominent personal name and a studio-like composition.
opening-07
Masthead
A strong masthead organizes the opening and its supporting media.
opening-08
Afterhours
A darker, more atmospheric variant explores a different tone.
opening-09
Gallery
Real photography creates a visual opening before the written record.
opening-10
Margin
A pronounced margin separates identity and context from the main content.
05 · Breadth, rejection, and selection
Thirty variations. Three different premises.
Several rounds looked productive without resolving the composition. The settings button felt detached. Ten options moved or framed the button, but too much of the surrounding lockup stayed the same. The rejection was specific: the exploration needed different relationships, not another treatment of the same arrangement.
The next rounds changed structure. Facing pages explored a typographic split. Studio index organized identity and professional context like a working record. Photographic opening gave personal images the first visual role. Ten variations in each family made the differences tangible.
I selected W3-09, the photographic contact strip. Its frame sequence made the character one element in a collection and gave the controls a natural home. The assistant’s shortlist favored other studies; the record preserves that distinction. Selection was followed by refinement: socials moved beside the name, the role became a vertical stack, and the lower page was aligned to the biography.
“i hate all of this - mainly bc its the same lock up”
10 photographic studies. Open any image to inspect it.
02-01
The open spine
An oversized sans signature faces a smaller portrait. A continuous bottom rule joins the descriptor to the professional record.
02-02
The colophon
A full-width name opens the spread. Below it, large serif positioning faces a contained portrait, with the role and contacts collected at the foot.
02-03
The recessed pair
Two equal inset pages: a tightly set identity on the left, a centered portrait on the right. Their footnotes share one precise baseline.
02-04
The foreword
A restrained name heads the left page; the three-part statement becomes the dominant typography. A shallow right-hand well gathers portrait and affiliation.
02-05
The low spread
A wide signature sits over a compact horizontal record. The portrait occupies the far-right end of the same band, keeping the showreel close.
02-06
Across the fold
Charlie and Weston each head one page. A serif statement occupies the left; the portrait and professional record complete the right.
02-07
The pocket portrait
A large serif name faces a small portrait in the top corner. The two pages meet through offset descriptor and role lines, without enclosing either page.
02-08
The inset leaf
An inset portrait leaf interrupts the right edge of a broad typographic page. The current role and contacts sit together below the name.
02-09
The counterpoint
The signature sits high on the left, the portrait low on the right. Positioning and affiliation form opposing corners of a single ruled spread.
02-10
The reading room
A modest masthead and two calm columns. The statement reads like an opening paragraph; the portrait is a small illustration beside the professional record.
w2-01
The ruled ledger
A compact masthead opens three generous numbered rows. The portrait belongs to the final row, so the controls have a clear address within the index.
w2-02
Three columns
The original three statements rotate into equal columns. Role, contacts, and the live portrait become the supporting material beneath each heading.
w2-03
The margin register
A large name spans the page. The portrait forms a quiet left margin beside a narrow, numbered typographic register.
w2-04
The studio directory
A stacked signature and the current role anchor the left. A three-row directory on the right leads into the portrait and social links.
w2-05
A table of contents
A small portrait shares the masthead. Three large linked statements route to work, résumé, and mentoring; the professional record remains visible beneath.
w2-06
The broadside
A small name and role sit above three bold sans lines. The portrait occupies the last line’s open space; contacts finish the composition.
w2-07
The lead entry
One large serif line leads; two smaller entries sit below. The portrait becomes a narrow right-hand column spanning the complete index.
w2-08
The working shelf
Three statements share a horizontal shelf below the name. A recessed utility band beneath holds the live portrait, role, and contacts.
w2-09
The cross index
Three descriptor rows align with a continuous portrait column and a separate professional record. Fine horizontal and vertical rules define the relationships.
w2-10
The typographic endnote
An intimate identity column meets an oversized serif index. A single endnote line collects the role and contacts beneath both.
w3-01
The corner caption
The name stays above a wide photograph. A paper cutout gives the live portrait a corner of the image; the role and positioning sit in the caption rail.
w3-02
The photographic spread
A typographic left page faces a tall photograph. The portrait and controls sit at the foot of the text page, with contacts below the image.
w3-03
The panorama
A large name and a low panoramic band make a compact opening. The character inhabits a solid extension of the image band, with one clear caption underneath.
w3-04
The cover story
A broad photograph fills the left side beneath the name. A narrow editorial column on the right contains positioning, the character, and the current role.
w3-05
The postcard
A square photograph balances a large serif statement. A small portrait and social line complete the text column, while affiliation captions the image.
w3-06
The wide window
A photograph appears between the full-width name and a three-part information rail. The live portrait sits in the middle of that rail, physically joining both sides.
w3-07
Two kinds of portrait
A photographic panel and an inset character panel form a diptych. Each has its own caption: positioning beneath the image, current role beneath the character.
w3-08
The long cutline
An asymmetrical title row puts the small portrait beside the name. The photograph runs edge to edge underneath; one generous cutline carries the record.
w3-09 · Selected
The contact strip
Three real photographs form an edited strip beneath a compact masthead. The character is a fourth, interactive frame; the descriptor and role form the footer.
w3-10
The paper aperture
A photograph sits in a shallow paper surround beneath the signature. An integral corner holds the character; the surrounding whitespace carries positioning and contacts.

06 · A parallel interaction-design thread
The object could be playful. The interface had to be precise.
The character evolved alongside the page. Early families tested silhouette and personality; later passes addressed arrival, assembled geometry, intermediate poses, and a living ASCII state. Those are related to the homepage composition, but they were a parallel stream rather than a single linear sequence of header iterations.
The most useful distinction was between the object’s expressiveness and the interface’s clarity. Motion could make the object feel alive. Settings still needed a stable place, recognizable actions, keyboard access, and a predictable way to close.
The selected controls unfold inside the frame. There is no visible product name to learn and no modal that takes over the page. The small trigger belongs to the object, while the revealed controls retain usable target sizes. The tradeoff is real: the frame now has to accommodate open, closed, narrow, loading, and reduced-motion states.
Original divergence sheet: test form before polishing a single silhouette.Original comparison: related alternatives within a more focused direction.
Original ASCII-to-assembly storyboard. The black Assembly cell is a missing rendered frame in the saved sheet, preserved here rather than reconstructed.Original motion study · ten character variations. Manual playback; no autoplay.

07 · Design decisions become implementation costs
The tradeoffs behind the surface.
A composition decision often created an engineering obligation. A shared navigation needed route behavior. A curated image strip needed an editing model. A small control needed a larger usable target. The code choices below show what each visual decision required and what it did not solve.
Some foundations were already present on main. In particular, the staged ASCII-to-3D strategy was inherited. It would be misleading to attribute that entire performance design to this homepage branch, or to claim a speed improvement without a controlled measurement.
Loading behavior · explanatory diagram
Static ASCIIVisible identity immediately→Intent or idleWarm when appropriate→Interactive objectHonor queued activation
Data Saver and 2G suppress speculative warming. Deliberate activation remains possible. This creates more states, not a free performance win.
01
Shared navigation across routes
+
Homepage branch
Design intent
The same recessed navigation should work throughout the site.
Implementation
Render it from the shared layout, derive active state from the pathname, and show pending navigation feedback.
Cost accepted
A shared component affects every public route, so scroll behavior, nested paths, hidden routes, and the Storybook link mock become part of the change.
Evidence & limits
The integration and mock fix are in separate commits; Quiet index is an explicit user selection.
Keep the character in the opening without waiting for its full renderer.
Implementation
Show static ASCII first; warm the interactive character on idle or pointer, focus, and touch intent. Suppress speculative warming on Data Saver and 2G; queue activation while loading.
Cost accepted
More loading and activation states to manage. On constrained connections, the interactive response may arrive later.
Evidence & limits
Verified in useWarmUp and HeroOrbit. This strategy was inherited from work already merged into main; no fresh speed improvement is claimed.
The settings button should belong to the object and stay unbranded.
Implementation
Use an inline dock. ResizeObserver switches to a 2 by 2 arrangement in narrow frames; hidden controls are inert; Escape closes the group and restores focus.
Cost accepted
The frame must reserve usable space and coordinate open state, focus, animation and resize behavior. The visual chrome is compact while the control slots remain 44px.
Evidence & limits
Explicit interaction preference plus implementation. Reduced-motion users get zero-duration transitions.
Let the owner select existing Shots or upload custom header images.
Implementation
Keep exactly three image slots with source and alt text. Validate sources and selected shots, reuse the image ingest pipeline, store the selection, then revalidate home on save.
Cost accepted
Authentication, Blob storage, deletion cases, a 4MB upload limit, and fallback content become part of maintaining a visual layout. Uploading and publishing a selection are separate actions.
Evidence & limits
API and data code verified. The earlier delivery explicitly left signed-in upload/save browser verification outstanding.
The navigation studies used 28px visual treatments while retaining larger interaction areas. The character dock uses 44px control slots. Keyboard focus is visible; Escape closes the dock and restores the trigger.
Editing is part of the design.
Three header slots preserve the composition. Each can use a Shot or a custom upload with alt text. Uploading stages an asset; saving publishes the selection. Deleted or invalid sources need a fallback rather than a broken frame.
Behavior should survive rearrangement.
A shared character controller exposes the stage and controls to different compositions. The selected header gets its own layout without cloning all the loading, audio, motion, and activation logic.
Reflow is a design decision.
The desktop’s label/content alignment yields to a readable stacked sequence on small screens. The two Ethos columns also collapse. Preserving every desktop alignment literally would make the phone experience worse.
08 · What refinement actually removed
Fewer competing ideas. More precise relationships.
The late requests were not another redesign. They protected the chosen composition while reducing friction within it. The social icons moved to the name row. Arca and the role gained vertical structure, with a small New York City line. The photograph corners adopted the character frame’s radius.
The media reel kept playback and advancement, but its language became Shots and Morphs, with Morphs selected initially. The visible counter and the captions “Photos & generative studies” and “Through my lens” were removed. The optics illustration kept a recessed pause button while its caption disappeared.
Further down, How I work became small bullets after the biography. The signature slider and additional social row were removed. Background became Education; the activity chart became Exploration; Design philosophy became Ethos. Company labels gave way to dates, and later explicit corrections superseded the initial reference. The last change replaced numbered principles with hexagons.
These decisions changed the page’s attention budget. The result retained the content and character, while making fewer elements ask to be read as separate features. That is a design interpretation supported by the visible changes, not a claim of measured reader performance.
Selected grid · all supporting content follows the biography’s column.
“i want to pause on any changes - make the updates from here to here but dont change anything about the larger home layout”
The useful outcome is a live, maintainable composition with a traceable series of decisions. The record also shows missed expectations, review friction, and implementation limits. Removing those would make the process look simpler and more successful than the evidence supports.
The homepage release passed a type check and five focused media-admin tests. Those tests exercise validation and fallback behavior with mocked services. They do not establish that a signed-in owner completed the upload/save flow in a browser; that check remained outstanding. Browser and responsive checks are observations, not formal accessibility certification.
There is no controlled before/after performance result here, no hiring conversion result, and no external user study. The visible design, selected directions, code, and release can be inspected directly.
Delivery
A working link was not enough.
Paper output was reported as delivered, but it was not visible in the expected account. The preserved record contains the ownership complaint and acknowledgement; it does not establish a complete repair of the original ownership issue. Later work used the user-supplied favorite file.
The lesson is operational: confirm the destination workspace and access from the owner’s perspective, not only whether a URL opens.
Exploration
Ten options can still be one idea.
The first settings round changed local treatment without changing enough of the lockup. Rejection prompted structural alternatives. More output was not useful until the axis of variation changed.
Scope
An earlier request stayed unresolved.
Two independent Shots and Vectors players were requested before the larger layout was frozen. The selected implementation has three header photographs and one Shots/Morphs player. This record does not reinterpret that mismatch as a delivered feature.
Release
Publishing the story did not ship the page.
The first production release contained this case study but not the approved homepage. After the discrepancy was called out, PR 88 was synced, checked and merged. The custom domain was then verified against the selected composition.
10 · The preserved record
Follow the decisions back to the feedback.
The searchable record contains 70 homepage requests, including two image-only entries; nine Paper comment threads; 23 earlier portfolio and character checkpoints; 22 implementation commits; and 26 curated decisions through the homepage release. Dates are shown in New York time. The curated checkpoints summarize events. Request and comment entries preserve the original wording.
This retained record covers the documented design streams rather than every tool call or every file produced. Working conversations overlap, so the archive and homepage request streams are grouped rather than presented as a falsely precise single sequence. Private project imagery, credentials, raw tool output, and internal reasoning are excluded.
Sep 30, 17:12ArchiveStart with the real portfolio+
Brief
Match the deck to the portfolio and use the résumé as evidence.
Decision
Run the actual Portfolio 2026 project locally. Resolve the initial Paper/Figma ambiguity to the supplied Figma Slides case study.
Recorded outcome
The existing site and case study became the visual and factual starting points. This was an adaptation of Charlie’s work, not a fabricated portfolio.
Retrospective lesson
A source-faithful brief is more useful than a generic premium style.
Sep 30, 17:33ArchivePolish exposed a hierarchy problem+
Brief
Premium and world class—then: “I don’t like the headings and text styles.”
Decision
After the first polish passes, change composition and hierarchy: quieter sentence-case headings, larger product views, asymmetric layouts and dark chapter breaks.
Recorded outcome
44 active slides received successive typography and art-direction passes. Before, polish and art-direction renders remain available as separate evidence.
Retrospective lesson
More styling did not resolve the structural concern. The response had to change where attention went.
Sep 30, 18:25ArchiveMake the work screen at Staff level+
Brief
Create a general sizzle deck that answers a hiring manager’s questions.
Decision
Prioritize recent, consequential work and clarify role, ownership, complexity and outcomes using the published résumé. Keep all publication in the personal Portfolio workspace.
Recorded outcome
A 13-slide portfolio brings Arca, Traversal, Instabase and Atlassian into one Staff-level narrative. The personal-workspace rule became a persistent chat preference.
Retrospective lesson
Seniority is demonstrated through decisions and scope; it cannot be supplied by visual polish or invented metrics.
Sep 30, 18:55ArchiveShow the evidence still needed+
Brief
Make a more interactive version and indicate where more information, images or video would help.
Decision
Use a clickable menu, before/after storytelling and visibly marked evidence gaps. Distinguish proposed media from material already available.
Recorded outcome
An 18-slide working edition preserves the polished story while exposing what must still be supplied.
Retrospective lesson
Visible gaps make a working portfolio actionable without pretending the evidence is complete.
Oct 02, 19:05ArchiveExplore the opening screen+
Brief
Create 4–5 homepage header directions on a branch from main; make them viewable away from the computer.
Decision
Keep the exploration additive and build distinct compositions: Signature, Systems in motion, Field notes, Work first and Design × engineering.
Recorded outcome
Five directions, a hosted personal preview and 25 recorded viewport checks. This thread ran in parallel after Orbit branched.
Retrospective lesson
Review access is part of the design workflow: a local-only page cannot help someone away from their computer.
Oct 02, 19:41ArchiveKeep the name and recessed navigation+
Brief
Develop favorites 1, 2 and 5; retain the pushed-in navigation, the name at the top, ASCII controls and existing content.
Decision
Add Studio, Masthead, Afterhours, Gallery and Margin. Treat the name and existing content as constraints rather than disposable layout elements.
Recorded outcome
Ten directions were printed into Paper with desktop and mobile reviews.
Retrospective lesson
A visual experiment can vary composition without erasing what makes a personal portfolio identifiable.
Oct 02, 21:39ArchiveMove from layouts into interaction+
Brief
Riff on the section in ten ways, use a jury, and make it feel more designed through interaction.
Decision
Build ten about-section layouts and five interaction studies. Use separate reviewers to challenge composition and behavior.
Recorded outcome
Editable Paper review material and local interactive studies were retained alongside the static layouts.
Retrospective lesson
The interaction needs to support the content’s reading order, not just decorate it.
Oct 02, 22:57ArchiveMake the next ten answer the comments+
Brief
Read the comments—then generate ten more from that feedback.
Decision
Resolve the actionable comments while retaining favorites as open signals. Expand into materially different typographic compositions.
Recorded outcome
Facing pages, The two-column record and Ink & daylight emerged as strong options. The recorded 50 viewport checks found no overflow or missing assets.
Retrospective lesson
Comments can be a new design brief, not merely a punch list.
Oct 02, 19:06ArchiveTen passes, one silhouette+
Brief
Model a buddy in Blender through ten cycles and establish how it could behave on the website.
Decision
Refine sphere → pebble → soft square; add gesture, grounding and manufactured detail; then remove excess expression and resolve articulated hands.
Recorded outcome
Ten native Blender versions, still renders and a web interaction study. The tenth was selected within that initial round, before Charlie’s later rejection of the range.
Retrospective lesson
Iteration depth and conceptual breadth are different. A highly resolved form can still answer the wrong question.
Oct 02, 19:43ArchiveThe rejection that changed the brief+
Brief
“It also looks like it’s the same blob just iterations on him.”
Decision
Fix review visibility and stop only refining the blob. Explore distinct families: Cursor, Folio, Loop, Orbit, Pixel and Spark.
Recorded outcome
A genuine silhouette comparison made selection possible remotely.
Retrospective lesson
The critical feedback was about sameness, not surface finish. The next round needed different underlying ideas.
Oct 02, 19:51ArchiveLet the logo determine the character+
Brief
Use the hexagon lockup. Keep the orb.
Decision
Develop a logo-derived hexagonal shell and offset amber accent around an orbital core.
Recorded outcome
The early Hex Orbit model established the brand relationship that survived later character and motion revisions.
Retrospective lesson
A recognizable source of form made the character more specific to Charlie.
Oct 02, 19:59ArchiveExplore a family of moving objects+
Brief
Ten variations; Guilty Spark as inspiration; make them move.
Decision
Build Keeper, Lockstep, Bloom, Gyro, Crescent, Facet, Relay, Iris, Lantern and Keystone with different shell and optical arrangements.
Recorded outcome
Ten native scenes, exported web models and individual motion clips. The family provided options for the deeper character pass.
Retrospective lesson
Breadth improved, but synchronized loops and target-like eyes still made the objects feel more like products than characters.
Oct 02, 20:21ArchiveBuild acting, not another idle loop+
Brief
Spend more time. Aim for Pixar quality. Have a judge and jury.
Decision
Use separate character and motion jurors plus a judge. Rebuild optics, lids and pivots; author notice, anticipation, curiosity, acknowledgment and recovery.
Recorded outcome
Eight craft rounds addressed anatomical-looking optics, weak gaze, lid penetration, oversized reflections and a rear chassis intersection. The final native film is 180 frames at 24 fps.
Retrospective lesson
The jury passed a refined portfolio prototype, explicitly not Pixar equivalence. Character 7.5/10 and motion 7/10 are the reviewers’ recorded judgments, not objective quality metrics.
Oct 02, 21:26ArchiveJudge it at the size people will see+
Brief
Render it on the website and record the interaction.
Decision
Integrate the model into the real homepage, adjust the browser presentation and record actual browser frames.
Recorded outcome
Homepage screenshots, an interaction recording, raw frames and source were retained. Replaced recording versions were recovered from Git.
Retrospective lesson
A studio render is not evidence of how the character reads inside the portfolio.
Oct 02, 22:10ArchiveGive the transformation some resistance+
Brief
How does the ASCII blob become this? Make it “iron man itself together”—less clean.
Decision
Stage the transition as independent shell assembly, with uneven timing, exposed mechanics and visible latching instead of a clean substitution.
Recorded outcome
The transition gained a storyboard and a browser implementation. Character parts assemble around the developing core.
Retrospective lesson
The premium feel came from a believable sequence of events, not a smooth crossfade.
Oct 02, 22:51ArchiveRepair the jump between the first two frames+
Brief
Add frames between 1 and 2; the latter half looks okay.
Decision
Focus the change on the opening: add intermediate views of the material taking shape without restarting the already accepted second half.
Recorded outcome
Storyboard 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d make the early assembly progression inspectable.
Retrospective lesson
Precise feedback can narrow effort. Preserve what is working while making the weak transition legible.
Oct 02, 23:34ArchiveASCII becomes a state worth staying in+
Brief
Follow the cursor. Activate deliberately. Let symbols evolve, congeal, spark and fight. Default to ASCII, including loading.
Decision
Expand the glyph sequence before any material appears. Add bounded gaze and interaction, and preserve an alive ASCII resting state.
Recorded outcome
The documented sequence gives ASCII 7.2 seconds before a 4.25-second shell assembly. Activation is deliberate; the experience no longer races directly into 3D.
Retrospective lesson
The beginning became an experience in its own right, which made the transition feel earned.
Oct 03, 00:19ArchiveMake the behavior controllable+
Brief
Audit accessibility, then create a PR.
Decision
Provide keyboard and non-drag alternatives, reduced-motion behavior, explicit pause and motion controls, and screen-reader names. Verify the interaction before preparing PR #82.
Recorded outcome
The review covers the Orbit experience and exercised flows; it is not whole-site WCAG certification. The branch and evidence remain available for review.
Retrospective lesson
Accessibility changed the interaction model as well as the labels.
Oct 03, 09:24ArchiveTurn text links into tactile controls+
Brief
Small icon buttons with the pushed-in aesthetic; screenshots and a Paper legend to review.
Decision
Carry the recessed navigation language into compact outline icons while retaining usable touch targets, names, hover labels and keyboard focus.
Recorded outcome
Desktop/mobile state screenshots and a default-theme Paper review with a button/interaction legend made the controls concrete enough to critique.
Retrospective lesson
A smaller visual footprint does not require a smaller interaction target.
Oct 03, 16:04ArchiveSeparate appearance, motion and playback+
Brief
Keep buttons from jumping. Motion off must freeze Orbit rather than revert to ASCII. Confirm mobile and add optional sound.
Decision
Reserve fixed control positions, separate per-model motion from appearance, and distinguish a one-shot playback pause from all motion. Add an explicit mute control with sound off by default.
Recorded outcome
The assembled model remains visible when frozen. Mobile layouts and playback states were exercised; sound is gesture-enabled and suspended when appropriate.
Retrospective lesson
A control should change only the state its label promises to change.
Oct 03, 16:29ArchiveReduce the resting visual noise+
Brief
Hide the floating buttons behind progressive disclosure, soften contrast and improve the design using component references.
Decision
Develop a recessed expandable rail, restrained enabled icon contrast and explicit focus/hover labels. Use the references as interaction input rather than a substitute for the portfolio’s visual system.
Recorded outcome
The rail presents one resting entry point and reveals the controls together. Closed controls are removed from interaction.
Retrospective lesson
Progressive disclosure made it possible to keep the controls legible when needed without dominating the hero.
Oct 03, 17:24ArchiveAnchor everything to the center+
Brief
Put the X in the center. All icons should be visible when open, with unavailable actions shown as disabled strokes. Confirm AA rules.
Decision
Fix the center control in place. Reveal appearance and sound to its left, motion and playback to its right. Keep the unavailable playback icon visible and explain its state.
Recorded outcome
The saved review measured enabled icon contrast at a minimum 3.24:1 and tooltip text at a minimum 9.93:1 across checked themes. Targets remain 44 px. Disabled controls do not imply an available action.
Retrospective lesson
Stable geometry makes changing states easier to understand. These measured checks are component evidence, not a blanket WCAG conformance claim.
Oct 03, 17:49ArchiveShip the reviewed branch+
Brief
Deploy.
Decision
Build a clean export of commit 0ce125a in the existing personal Vercel project, validate the staged deployment, then promote it to rcweston.com.
Recorded outcome
Production build and TypeScript passed. The deployed renderer and model matched the source bytes; live activation, playback pause/resume and assembled motion freeze were exercised. PR #82 remains unmerged.
Retrospective lesson
A release ends this documented round, not the opportunity for further refinement.

Feedback
Headings and text still feel wrong; do more layout and art direction.
Response

Sep 30DecisionMake the Staff story legible+
Feedback
Build a general sizzle portfolio for a hiring manager; represent Staff level.
Response
A 13-slide portfolio prioritizes recent work, scope, ownership, and outcomes.
Result
A separate 18-slide working edition adds navigation and marked evidence gaps.
Oct 05, 00:59DecisionRelease the approved homepage+
Feedback
Ship it; the case-study deployment did not include the homepage.
Response
Preserve the published article while syncing and merging homepage PR 88.
Result
Production deployment Ready; the custom domain visibly shows W3-09, Morphs, corrected dates, and the shared lower-page grid.

1-2-5 are the most interesting
I want to keep the ui feel of the nav being pushed in so that should carry over as this design scales. I also want to keep all the content in home ( below the hero image ) as is today. The layout can adjust but content should carry over and feel free to add. On 5 I really liked the idea of using my rotating ascii thing as the object and giving some light weight controls to customize
Largely explore this with 5 more directions. Make this not feel vibe coded
